Butterflies’ Curriculum Map
We shall begin by reading some seasonal poems by Shirley Hughes from her collection ‘Out and About’ and then go on to write our own poems.
Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper will then be on our menu. The beautifully rich text will help us to become amazing authors too before writing and using instructions to make soup. I have a feeling Treacle will be in need of instruction on how to post a letter (to The North Pole).
Why do we have fireworks and bonfires at this time of year? We will learn about Guy Fawkes and his dangerous exploits as well as making sure we know how to keep ourselves safe.
Drawing and Painting
We shall look at the work of the illustrator Charlotte Voake “A Little Guide to Trees” and who also wrote the book Ginger. We will draw detailed leaves, trees and pumpkins to make our own Pumpkin Soup inspired picture.
The Journeys End. The story of the birth of Jesus.
Will usually be on a Tuesday and Thursday so please help your child to change independently by ensuring they are able to take off and put on the uniform they are wearing on those days. This term we will explore balancing on different parts of the body and jumping in all directions with control.
We will continue to add information to our Nature Diary throughout the term, recording the changes to the weather, plants and trees and wildlife as Autumn changes into winter. We will learn about hibernation and consider which animals are nocturnal and diurnal.
Year R Butterflies will continue to learn to recognise, order and count to 20. Say which group is greater/ less and the number that is one more or one less. We will continue learning both 2D and 3D shapes. As the term progresses we will also learn about money (1p coins), time (days, months, Morning, afternoon, evening and o’clock) height (taller/ shorter and positional language.
Year 1 Butterflies will develop a range of strategies to solve addition and subtraction calculations, initially to 10 and then up to 20. We shall also develop confidence with number bonds to 10 and to count in 2’s and 10’s. We will join with the Year R children to re-cap our knowledge of shape, time, money and length.
In December our learning will have a Christmas theme. The Jolly Christmas Postman will deliver the required excitement and we shall learn the story of the very First Christmas.
